Peaceful life of the Islaevs’ estate is out of balance once a young teacher shows up. The landlady falls in love with Belyaev although she is aware that her ward feels drawn to him. Neither her husband nor her old friend and admirer can stop this feeling that has suddenly come over her.
The director Aleksander Ogarev deliberately avoids realistic surroundings, historical and mundane specifics. This performance is a fantasy about dreams and suffering of the noble characters of Turgenev’s play. All the words here are not for real: they are from a novel or a fairy tale, a film or a drawn story. But the feelings that are first only spoken about become a real power, destructive in its action. As a result, the engine of the story is the fatal turn of events rather than provincial boredom. A Month In The Country is about the ability of love to create a story of dimension and large scale even in a small space; it is a great gift that elevates the person but once it transforms into an uncontrollable elemental force, it can also destroy.
The premiere performance took place on 29 October 2011
