The chief director of The Lensoviet Academic Theatre (from February 18, 2011).

He was born on September 24, 1961 in Leningrad region.

Yuriy Butusov graduated from the Shipbuilding Institute. He worked on different specialty for some time and tried his hand at various professions. He was seriously engaged in equestrian sport.

In 1996 he graduated from the directing department of the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts (the course of I. Malochevskaya).

By the invitation of Vladimir Pase he was working as a director at the Open Theatre since 1996.

Butusov has attracted the attention even his student`s work - "Marriage" by Gogol (1995) and "Paradoxalist" ("Notes from the Underground" by Fyodor Dostoevsky) (1996).

His graduated work "Waiting for Godot" by S. Beckett, which was released in the Theater on the Kryukov Canal (1996), made his famous: this performance was called "event of the year". Yuriy Butusov was awarded with the highest prize as The Best Director at the St. Petersburg festival "Christmas Parade".

He taught at the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts (The Russian University of Theatre Arts).

Now he works successfully in Moscow. He directed the following performances: "Makbett" by Eugene Ionesco, "Richard III» and "King Lear" by William Shakespeare, "The Seagull" by Anton Chekhov, "Othello" by William Shakespeare (at the Theatre "Satyricon"), “ Resurrection. Super of Presnyakov brothers” (Studio Theatre under the direction of Tabakov)," Hamlet " by William Shakespeare," Ivanov " by Anton Chekhov (at Chekhov Moscow Art Theater)," Measure for Measure "by William Shakespeare (at Vakhtangov Theater) "The Good Person of Szechwan" by B. Brecht (at The Pushkin Theater).

Also he directed performances in South Korea ("Woyzeck" G.Byuhnera, "The Seagull" by Anton Chekhov – the  National Theatre of Korea, Seoul), Poland ("Dog Waltz" by Leonid Andreev – at The theater Wybrzeże, Gdansk), Norway ("Crime and Punishment "Dostoevsky," Romeo and Juliet "by William Shakespeare – at The Hålogaland theater, g.Tremse) and Bulgaria (" Duck Hunt "A.Vampilov - at Theatre Ivan Vazov, Sofia).


Yuriy Butusov was awarded with the International Prize of Stanislavsky in the category "The best Director of the season" for the production of "Caretaker" G.Pintera at State dramatic Theatre at Liteyniy in 1998.


Repeatedly he received a prestigious award "The Seagull."

Also he is the winner of the National Theatre Award "Golden Mask" in the nomination "Drama / Direction" for directing the play "The Seagull" in a Moscow theater "Satyricon" (season 2010/2011).

And he is the winner of the "Crystal Turandot" in the category "The best Director" for staging the play "The Good Person of Sezuan " in The Pushkin Theatre, besides  "The Good Person of Sezuan" (“Der gute Mensch von Sezuan”) – became the winner of the International Stanislavsky Award in the category "Event of the season."


Yuriy Butusov is a director of the performance «LIEBE.Schiller» at The Mayakovsky Theatre.
